Seeing so many women struggle with their hormones and so many unaware that testing is available, I decided to write this blog
Fortunately it's something we are born with and can't survive without them, though for many they can cause a world of problems. At times they seem to have a mind of their own, as well as create some over the top crazy symptoms to the point that many women feel like they are actually going crazy -Yes, I am are talking about hormones!
Quite often the very first introduction to imbalanced hormones as a young girl is the Oral Contraceptive pill, with over 62% of women using the pill, most women don’t give it a second thought.
Fast forward 15 years and we see some of these women who have been trying to fall pregnant for some time, only to find out after further investigations they actually have PCOS, Endometriosis or associated hormonal disturbances but unfortunately were unaware, as they have been on the pill for many years.
However, while the pill is both convenient and effective at preventing pregnancy, it also comes with some dangerous and nasty side effects such as weight gain, depression, lack of sex drive, nutrient deficiencies and increased cancer risk to name a few.
A hormonal imbalance can present differently in each person but here are a list of a few symptoms and common conditions of unhappy hormones.
Classic symptoms for a female with imbalanced hormones may be:
- Mood swings
- Irregular period
- Period Pain
- Low sex drive
- Night sweats
- Brain Fog
- Sleep Disturbances
Many women experience much more intense hormonal conditions which are accompanied by their own long list of symptoms and side effects which may look like:
- Polycystic Ovaries
- Ammenhoea (absence of period)
On a Positive note
Testing is very simple and it's done from your saliva so absolutely no blood test.
Once you have received your test kit - OFF YOU GO! We will receive your results within 10 - 14 working days - it's that easy.
Depending if you have a cycle or not, will depend if you need to complete your test on a specific day of your cycle. If you still have a menstrual cycle that is fairly regular, majority of the time we look at day 21 of your cycle been the magic day for collection.
Testing your hormones is like getting the key to a lock - it's quite exciting to find the hidden secrets and the have a few answers to your why's:
- why am I feeling this way
- why do I get so moody and cranky
- why are you struggling with so much pain each month
Unless you have the full picture and a complete hormonal view, you are taking a stab in the dark when it comes to treatment, in hope it's right for you.
One last note - A salivary hormone test can differ significantly from a general hormonal blood test.
Salivary hormone testing can look at all three of your Oestrogens - E1, E2 and E3 and a comparative ratio of what types we need more of or less of, giving you a more in depth understanding.
Salivary hormones which you can test are anything from your typical hormone -Oestrogen, progesterone and Testosterone to Cortisol, DHEA and SHBG.
